The Allies won that war. The primary players for the Allies were England, Russia and the USA. Canada made a large contribution as well, especially in the battle of the Atlantic.
If you're looking for which country was MOST instrumental in that victory I'd have to go with the USA. Not as much for military effort as for industrial. The USA supplied 90% of all rifle ammunition to the allies (possibly except the USSR). They built Liberty ships faster than the Germans could sink them. They built so many tanks, planes, jeeps, half-tracks, trucks, trains and weapons that they supplied both the British and the Russians the bulk of their hardware in the early stages of the war. They built a Navy so fast and so huge that it effectively dominated two major oceans. Their airforces dominated the skies of the Pacific and Europe. Both with combat aircraft and with cargo planes.
Without US participation it's highly doubtful that the Allies would ever have been in a position to launch any meaningful counter attack.

Assuming that anyone really wins in war. You cant just say "The Allies" because the 'other' side had allies too. The Italians switched sides half way through. The winning side was the U.S.A., Russia, Great Britain, France, lets not forget Poland. The losers were the Germans and Japanese. Actually America was fighting in two wars simultaneously as the Germans and Japanese were not necessarily allies.
In the long run, the big winners were Japan and Israel.

The Alliance of Britain , the United States, and Russia, not mentioning the others who played a smaller role, suppressed or conquered the Axis Powers, mainly Germany at the end,in the European theatres and the eastern front.
The crushing of Berlin tends to make it seem that Russia defeated Hitler, but it was a group effort.
Operation Barbarossa was a big gamble for Hitler.
He "bet" that Germany could defeat the Russians by keeping his troops supplied with constant air drops to be provided by the Luftwaffe.
However, the German troops did not recieve the supplies they needed in sufficient numbers.
The Luftwaffe was greatly depleted at this stage in the war.
Suffering from a lack of experienced pilots and unable to replenish the planes it was losing (due to U.S. constant bombardment of German industries),the Luftwaffe simply could'nt meet the demands Operation Barbarossa.
Hitler had been warned of this in advance.
Still he made the "Bet".
German troops, with insufficient supplies, could not accomplish a quik and decisive victory before the full brunt of the Russian winter set in.
The troops did not go into battle supplied with winter gear.
The Luftwaffe could not supply it fast enough.
The Russians, however, were quite used to the harsh winter conditions.
Hitler lost the bet!
The Russians won what they refer to as "The Great Patriotic War",and invaded Germany.
Germany did support Japan, sharing technology (jet aircraft to name one), and Hitler's ideals.
Hitler also fanned the flames a bit in hopes that Japan could distract the United States and keep them out of Europe.
Another ill fated "Bet".
As for who won the war in the Pacific theater,or conquered Japan if you prefer, after four brutal years of sea and air and land battles and months of fire bombing Japanese cities,in the end it only took two to finally topple Japan.
A "Little Boy" and a "Fat Man"!
Of course this turned the two largest world powers, allies during the war, against each other.
And thus the next war began.
The Cold War.

The overall victors in WW2 were the Allies. However, you are right, the Soviets were the ones who contributed most to the war. While theyd hate to admit it, America, and us English, would never have won without your help.

the Red Army
Yeah it was a team effort, but in my humble opinion, the fate of the second world war was decided by the outcome of Operation Barbarossa.....
A decisive role was played by the USSR, USA, and Britain. THE decisive roll was played by the USSR, go ask its 20 million dead.....
Just to give you an idea of battle deaths on both sides check these out:
EASTERN FRONT:
Stalingrad: 1.8 million
Siege of Leningrad: 1.5 million
Moscow 1941-42: 700,000
Smolensk 1941: 500,000
Kiev 1941: 400,000
Vorenesh 1942: 370,000
Belarus 1941: 370,000
2nd Rzhev-Sychevka: 270,000
Caucasus 1942: 260,000
Kursk: 230,000
Lower Dnieper: 170,000
Kongsberg: 170,000
Rostov: 150,000
Budapest: 130,000
and others with less killed
Whereas on the Western Front
Battle of France 180,000
Normandy: 132,000
El Alamein: 70,000
Battle of the Bulge: 38,000
Not even on the same scale....do the math....

A list of who had the most casualties in no way reflects who "won" the war. Gen. George Patton - "No bas.tard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other dumb bas.tard die for his."
What won WW2 was most probably the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. They allowed the U.S to create a war material manufacturing juggernaut without interference from the enemy. Logistics wins wars.

The survivors won - the losers came second the industrial nations came third - yes they did make it a third-world, just like the third reich.. then came the colourful invention of Windows logo basically to hide the form of the swazstica. I am at odds as to who the allies actually did overcome.

The Allies.
The Russians would have lost without the rest of us.
We would have lost without the rest of them, as would have Britain, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, et al.
How many different ways are you going to ask this question?
Until you get the answer you want?
Bottom line - Germany and Japan LOST.
