They are tough to find at that price but if you are patient it can happen. A friend of mine picked up a Yamaha 400 for $125 last summer. It ran great and he is still riding it. Tell your wife to cut you some slack and let you spend a couple hundred more. Good Luck.

If you are not in a hurry and you look long enough there is a very slim chance that you can find something for $300. But you would have to be lucky. But yes for $1,000 you can find something decent. But then again the longer you hold onto your money and the longer you look the better the deal. There have been some really good deals going on this summer and my garage is already full or I would have had a lot more of them.
Try to have a good idea of what you want ,size, style, make, before you start seriously looking. Or just look at everything to see what the prices are like. Good Luck and have fun.

You won't get much for $300. if you know a lot of people, you could get a bike that needs some work for cheap, put some money into it, ride it, and sell it for a profit. Look for an old Triumph in decent shape, but doesn't run right. If the guy doesn't know what he has, you could make some serious coin.
I have a friend who is selling a Yamaha Seca 550 for $500 and it is decent, so you can find some stuff for $500.
Just thought of something, a friend of mine recently bought a Honda CB750 for $300 that needed a starter. He got a junk yard starter for under $100 and he now has a nice looking, nice running bike that he has around $400 in.

SURE - anything is possible. I had one given to me not long ago that ran great (Honda CX500), another that was picked up at a yard sale for $150 (Bridgestone 350). Of course, it is something of a "crap shoot" on bikes in this price range as to how well it will run, or how much work they will need. You have to know a little bit about what you are looking for, so consult the services of a knowledegable friend
BUT - the trick is to get the bike home! Afterwards, it is much easier to sneak in the spare parts - they are small, and generally unnoticed... ;-) The adventure begins!!! I'd recommend that you start asking around with friends if someone know of a bike that is just gathering dust, or start watching the yard sale ads in the paper.

Yes, there is a good chance. It will require patience and good choices. Try craigslist.org for your area. Yesterday I saw one for free, guy just wanted to clear out his yard. Last year I bought a good running CB750K with full fairings, hard bags, guards, etc. After a new set of tires, oil change and a few small parts it was just fine. Total invested: just under $1000, including 2 hours at dealer rate of $75.00/hr. Where did I find it? Craigslist.
Good Luck.

Keep shopping, and try estate sales. I would have sold my Dads bike cheep if he hadn't sold it already and it was safe as well as reliable. What are some of the more expensive things your wife has? Would she put a $300 limit on a car? This is a safety issue, too. Does she love you or is she trying to get you killed on your way home?

More around 500.00+ for something that runs.
But you will probably break down on the way home.
Your better off trying to get her to at least go with the 1000 OBO mark
