I agree with the statement made by the Yahoo user, thylawyer. All you have to do is do a websearch for your state and the words, unemployment. Something like a Yahoo search for; New York State Unemployment. The state's website will instruct you how to apply for unemployment benefits. You can usually do it online.

Oh, and by the way. Don't feel bad about it either. I have been gainfully employed since I was 16 years of age and old enough to to work. Since graduating from college, I worked every year for 20 straight years without ever having to file for an unemployment benefit claim. (I did change jobs in that time period.) Then, in 2006, the proverbial corporate axe fell across my neck and I was told to hit the road, my services were no longer needed. I figure that I paid into the system for 25+ years and this was my chance to get a bit of the benefit paid back to me that is rightfully mine. (And don't let anyone tell you it's the company that pays for it. If we did not have unemployment insurance premiums that companies paid, then they would simply pay it into our wages and we would collect that way.) Get your money...you deserve it!

You qualify by working for a company that pays unemployment insurance premiums to the state long enough to be covered.

You start by calling, visiting or going to the online site for your state's unemployment office (or department of transitional assistance, as it's called in MA, or whatever it is called in your state. You fill out the form, they verify your coverage and you start getting your checks. The details vary from state to state.

go to your local unemployment office, they'll give you a test and see what jobs you are qualified for. Then they will help you get one. It's not fun but they will help you
