Everyone I know with a baby does the pillow shaking method to help babies fall asleep. But its done gently almost like your rocking them. Doing it fast is crazy and it wont help the baby fall asleep.

That's terrible! Your friend shouldn't have that baby, and DONT let her watch your child. Do you think shaking a baby (pillow or not) is a good idea? No! You really should confront her about it. If she denys it, talk to her husband.

It's unlikely that kind of shaking will cause SBS. SBS is caused by excessive force.
What she is doing is something that is actually recommended by Dr. Karp in the book Happiest Baby on the Block.

WHAT !!!! I think any kind of excessive shaking can and eventually will lead to SBS... Have you ever mentioned it to her that it might not be a good idea to do such a thing? I would if possible get a video (via camera phone or something ) of her doing this and take it to a physician and see what he/she thinks... I wouldn't let her watch my dog much less my child.. Do in your heart what you think is right.. Good luck

If you are uncomfortable having her watch your kid then dont do it plain and simple. I used to use what they call teh jiggle method where I would put my daughter on my news and would jiggle her back and forth. It helped calm her down quite a few times. Since we are not there to witness it we can not tell you if what she is doing will cause SBS.

Just tell her that it's probably not a good idea to do what she does to her baby. Does she know about SBS? It's scary how many people DON'T know

If she's doing it very fast, then how would the child fall asleep? And yes, it could cause injury.

You shouldn't leave your kids with someone if you don't feel comfortable about it.
