Dear Helen,
The answer is yes and i think that everyone is facing this unpleasant experience.
Therefore, before playing I try to spend time on Chessmaster 10th edition in order to grasp again the key elements of chess strategy.
I like Josh Waitzkin move by move explanations relating to his own games as well as the "Chessmaster" problems on strategy, tactics, defense and end games.
Chess is unfortunately not an easy game and we all have to invest a lot of time in order to see improvements.

Those who learn to play chess, learn to think. According to Benjamin Franklin, "The game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement. Several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired or strengthened by it, so as to become habits, ready on all occasions." Chess is the King of Games, and the Game of Kings.

Wish I knew how to play chess - I don't. But when I was little, I played chess with girlfriends, OUR WAY.
How you ask? Well, we had the little horsies playing on the squares together, then they took the people to the castle to have tea and cookies while the queen made sandwiches for everyone! Yeah, it was alot of fun then. Who knew that wasn't the real way to play?

I love the game, but do not play enough to be good. I'm really not around anyone to play with. I usually get beat when I play

Choose what you think that's good for you...everythink what we do and we choose, if that make our performance goes down that because what we do is wrong....
