Being friends or just co-workers?

There's this coworker and we'd been good friends for the last 2 yrs (since I started working), but right now he says he just wants us to be co-workers. Should I be less friendly with him now? Serious while talking to him? I have no clue what to do...

He wants to back off, you back off. There's no point in pestering the man.
