I'd have to go with Wayne Gretzky, because he not only dominated his sport but revolutionized the way the game was played.
Gretzky broke the goal-scoring record in a season by 20%, and the points mark by almost 50%. He also scored 50 goals in 39 games at a time when nobody had done so in less than 50 games. Some of his records seem as unattainable as old baseball pitching records like Cy Young's 500+ wins.
Gretzky also dominated the sport so much that he helped changed not only the style but the rules. His Oilers were so dominant in 4-on-4 play that the NHL changed the rules for coincidental minor penalties to allow continued 5-on-5 play. And his smooth skating and passing style set the tone for the way the game would be played during the 1980s. He was truly one in a million.

Wilt Chamberlain is in both the basketball and volleyball hall of fame, and, as a college freshman, earned letters in shot put, high jump, and the quarter mile. He scored 60 points in a game more times than the combined total of every other person to ever play in the NBA. In a televised game before blocked shots were an official statistic, Wilt blocked TWENTY THREE shots. Some of the things he did were so far above what others accomplished that the numbers no longer make an impact (e.g., 55 rebounds in one game; 20 pts 20 assists and 20 rebounds in the same game, 9 seasons of 20 ppg and 20 rpg, etc.)
Honorable mention goes to Pele, Wayne Gretzky, Willie Mays, and Michael Jordan.

Not my favorite because I am a Knicks fan, but I'd say Michael Jordan. To go by sport, it would be Wayne Gretzky in hockey, and probably Willie Mays in baseball (although I never saw him play). Football is too debatable because of offense, defense, and so many positions. My 2 cents.
