Why do I have the impression that I could build a PC with MAC's specs, and paying roughly half of the price of the MAC?

If somebody pays me 500 (cause' that's the difference in price roughly) pounds just for dealing with the viruses i'll take it and continue using a PC.

I have a Dell laptop and an Apple laptop. They cost about the same because I got all the best goodies on the Dell. I don't think you can get exactly the same quality for half price. Someone is not giving the specs a close look, in my opinion. But, let's not quibble about how much you could spend. Let's look at how much you can do with what you buy. I use the Dell about one hour a week, sometimes one hour a month. I use the Apple about 45 hours a week. But I don't play computer games and I do a lot of photo and video work. I would get about half as much done by using the Dell, mostly because Windows is not as productive as the Mac OS X. Doing things much faster saves me thousands each year so it's a no-brainer choice. Even major PC magazines that run productivity tests on Mac versus Windows show similar results. Professionals usually choose Mac because they don't want to waste time (time is money). Think about "down time". You don't want to spend too much time waiting for Windows to reload, defrag, de-virus, repair registry, etc. Of course, that could be a good time to count your savings... slowly.
There is quite a lot to consider when you "build" a PC. Even though you may have a processor with similar specs, is it exactly the same type of processor? There are many options available in processors and if you are choosing a different processor that has the same clock speed but is not the same in other ways, you are comparing pears to oranges.
All of these considerations apply to every aspect of a finished product such as the power supply, the case, the Firewire speed, the options for video output, etc. I doubt you are "building" a laptop, but if you were choosing a basic model and then selecting the comparable options, consider the MagSafe connector on all new Mac laptops. Are you getting that in your PC laptop? All it takes is one goof by moving too fasts putting sudden strain on the power connection of the main board and poof, you're looking at an expensive repair not to mention time without your laptop.
Another thought about building a desktop unit: what type of warranty do you have and how easy is it to get warranty repairs? If the warranty is not very important, consider a second-hand Mac. There's your huge savings. You can also buy refurbishes Macs from Apple and the warranty is exactly the same as that of a new one. Go to store.apple.com and search for "refurbished".

You are wrong,
Mac is expensive, because you don't have to deal with Viruses, Trojan's and all the other junk that the PC World have to deal with.
NOt to mention, I own 2 of them, for over 5 years, and never had a hiccup of any kind, for any reason, I'll bet you can't say the same about any PC.

They're expensive because they are incredible machines. They are not as susceptible to viruses and crashing as PCs are and also hold their value a lot better than a PC. I have had to replace every PC I have owned within just a few years. Basically, you get what you pay for.

You get what you pay for, and MACs undoubtedly are high quality, that's what you're paying for. If you build a machine yourself, even with MAC specs, its not going to be genuine MAC now, is it?

well, for one thing macs are awesome!!! i think the reason that a mac is so expensive is that when they first came out they over priced them and now they have to make up for lost business. also they come with all the software on them.

They are for shallow people who have no idea about computers but want something on their desk that they can brag about because it looks good (I don't think they do but hey) even though they have no idea how to use it.
It can be compared to a handbag.
Gucci or a copy???
They are still both handbags, but you get ripped off for one of them even though they both serve the same purpose.
P.S. - Bex13 - The first virus ever written was for a MAC

If people are willing to spend that kind of money, Apple will gladly take it. Look at that silly iphone, $600 for a cell phone ?
No thank you.
