I'm a Lisa H too. Funny. Anyways, it depends on what you are looking for. There are plenty of trendy restaraunts in Hillcrest that have a variety of cuisines and most all of them are delicious. The best Mexican restarants are going to be found in Old Town, Fred's and the Old Mexican Cafe are my favorite. There are also many great restaraunts in the Gaslamp district downtown. The executive chef of the seafood restaraunt "Oceanair" has been named "Best Chef" in San Diego and he is also on the Bravo Chanel's show "Top Chef" as a contestant. If you want to know of a good breakfast place, the Broken Yolk, in Pacific Beach has tons of omelets and your choice of toast or these mouthwatering biscuits. San Diego has a ton of great restaraunts. I'm originally from Portland and was quite the 'foody' there, and I have to say that I'm very impressed with what San Diego has to offer. There's also always the authentic taco shops that are usually pretty good too if you want a cheaper meal on the go.

It depends where you will be since San Diego County is 4 times larger than Rhode Island. Assuming San Diego city, the best areas for dining are the Gaslamp District downtown and Hillcrest, about 2 miles north of downtown. A lot of great restaurants are also along the beaches. A few favorites of mine are Berta's in Old Town (selections from Latin and South American countries), Peohe's in Coronado for seafood (entrees are pricey - $25 -$30 each), Savory in Encinitas about 25 miles north of downtown, Parallel 33 in Hillcrest, and Mamma Mia's in Pacific Beach for a family run Italian restaurant (bring your own wine). A very authentic Chinese restaurant in Kearny Mesa is a hole in the wall, but amazingly delicious. It's called Spicy City and I've been there for lunch at least 50 times. One more on the pricey side is Thee Bungalow in Ocean Beach. One of the best wine lists in town, terrific service, and the beach is a couple of blocks away. Happy dining!

San Diego has some pretty fantastic restaurants. In fact, so fantastic, I don't think I have a favorite here--it's just too difficult to choose. Here are a few on my "Best Restaurant" list when I have family/friends visiting from out of town:

Mexican: Casa Guadalajara (Old Town), El Callejon (Encinitas)
Chinese: Dumpling Inn in Kearny Mesa
Steak: Turf Club (it's cook your own)
Seafood: Blue Point Coastal Cuisine
Food w/a View: George's by the Cove (La Jolla), World Famous (Pacific Beach), Jake's (Del Mar), Hotel Del Restaurant/Patio Bar
Drinks w/a view: Top of the Hilton (downtown), Pacifica Breeze (Del Mar),

For more ideas, check out the sites I've listed that offer "Best ofs" and off the beaten track. Bon appetite!

I agree with Kristin...El Callejon in Encinitas has THE BEST margaritas; the cilantro soup is totally unique and very very good; if you love cilantro give it a try. The shrimp wrapped with bacon, with your choice of mole or chapotle sauce, yum!

George's at the Cove in La Jolla is good too, good view, great food, nationally known chef; now called George's California Modern but same owner and chef.

For good food taking advantage of a great oceanfront view try patio dining at the Beach House in Cardiff. Sunset is magical there.

Gormet Italian, try Vigilucci's in Encinitas. I always have a lovely time there.

Cafe at the Prado in Balboa Park: great view, fantastic garden setting.

Pizza and Microbrews: Pizza Port!!!!!!!! Solana Beach or Carlsbad.
I don't know how they come up with such tasty tomato sauce for the pizzas but the pizzas are awesome and they always have plenty of beers on tap, including at least one cask conditioned beer.

An abundance of good fast food/take out options include: KC Tandor (Indian), Island Brothers Teriyaki (multiple locations north county), and Noodles & Co (love their Thai Curry Soup and Mediterranean Salad.) Of course, Rubios for fish tacos, of course.

There's a little little Turkish restaurant of about 12 tables in Leucadia on Coast Hwy that has a dish called Iskandar, that looks like nothing special but is spectacular. Restaurant is the Bird House. On Fri and Sat they have belly dancers (you gotta have a reservation those nights). They don't have beer or wine but you can walk down the street to the liquor store and get your own and drink it there...no corkage fees at all. Turkish coffee is good too. Inexpensive restaurant. Baklava is good but is only there if mama feels like making it, and it's gone shortly after it's made, so you may have to go many times to catch the baklava. It's definitely a local find; lots of fun.

Phils BBQ was voted the best bbq in SD several years in a row. Hash House has the best breafast and has been voted best in SD several times too. Do not go to Broken Yolk in PB, the food is gross and overrated, it's just a popular place for hungover chickenheads to down mimosa's and yap about how drunk they got the night before. Anthony's Seafood in downtown is great. Also Max's on 6th st in downtown is good too.
