Its a minefield. part with your money carefully.
.co.uk should cost you about £3 per year in blocks of 2 years
.com will be £8 to £10 per year.
Hosting can be found for around £25 to £35 per year.
A simple static 3 to 5 page web design will be around £100
Dynamic content and custom programming will be much more, although there are plenty of templates and scripts available for free.

I strongly recommend that for design you use someone local to you that you can sit opposite and talk to. Discuss why you want the website and what it should achieve. There are so many good designers in every town, theres no reason not to!

Hope that help.

I've used quite a few web hosting services and by far the best that I have found for the UK is Layershift, their UK hosting seems second to none. They will also let you manage a domain name with your hosting package and it's all reasonably low price and easy to manage.

Their tech support is above reproach with average replies being less than 10 minutes :D

Best place to register a domain for UK is namecheap.com. If you want a webdesigner I am from UK and available for work.
my portfolio can be found at http://www.intelligent-studios.co.uk I have a lot more recent work though.

If you want to set up your own site for free then I have written an article for people to new to the internet which may help:
