Well since there are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on a beach, I believe it pretty darned arrogant to believe that ours is the only one with a planet that harbors life.

With all of the stars in the universe, the odds of us being the only intelligent life that exists, has existed, or will exist is pretty small.
On the other hand, compared to the life of the planet, how long life has existed on the planet, how long intelligent life has existed, and how long civilization has had a means of transmitting and receiving a signal from another system vs. how long any signal will take to reach another inhabited star system, and how long before we destroy civilization or run out of feul ......
In other words, I'd surprised if we're the only intelligent life that has ever existed or will exist in the universe. I'd be equally surprised if we ever contacted a living civilization of intelligent life. We almost may as well be alone in the universe.
We may not be alone in the universe, but we're alone in a mighty big forest.

Until we can prove otherwise, this is almost a philosophical question. And it really also depends on defining what you mean by "alone". Do you mean all life in any form? Or do you mean an advanced species that we could learn to communicate with and to ponder each others existence and share technology?
However, I really do hope we are on the verge of answering that very question. It seems our best hope so far is a select few moons around Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. Each have a promising celestial body that may harbor bacterial, primitive or complex lifeforms in water underneath a frozen landscape. Similar to prawns and bacteria that flourish around thermal vents deep beneath the ocean with no penetrating light. Something similar may be occurring on these orbiting partners.
The one thing I truly wish is that we confirm or negate this in my personal lifetime.
This is a question that most humans longing for validation for their place in this Universe will continue to ponder.

Yes. We are all alone, as any other life forms would be too far away to visit us easily.
