I usually plan it out a li'l bit but when I get there then who knows.. there's always another changes of plan to make. It's always fun to be spontaneous. <*-*>

Depends on my mood, and my destination.
Travel to Europe on a short holiday needs planning, and advance bookings of hotels, tours etc.
Yet, when I traveled around the Philippines for 6 months (that was before my baby was born) I naturally did not have an itinerary. I got myself the book "Luzon by Car" by Jill Gayle de Villa and made marks on all the destinations I have done, and scheduled loosely those I haven't seen. After I was done with all the Luzon destinations, I set out to do Visayas and Mindanao, moving from point to point without a fixed schedule nor itinerary. I would stay longer in places I liked (I enjoyed the afternoons in Roxas City's "baybay" where umbrellas sprout and barbecue and beer are served while sitting in monobloc chairs on the shore, at prices unvelievably cheap) or leave an area where I am not comfortable with - meaning I do not like the aura of the place.
Try traveling using different modes of transport - -fly, then take superferry, ride buses, hike, etc. These are best done unplanned trips. Best of all, if I am not catching a flight or a ride to the next destination, I can afford to get a hangover anytime I feel like enjoying to the hilt. No worries.

You should always have a skeleton plan - for example, make hotel reservations! Have transportation available. After that I think it is fun to go with the flow.
We're in Denver this week on a working vacation and yesterday afternoon just decided to go to the Rocky Mountain State Park. We ended up on top of a mountain surrounded by elk and clouds. Not planned, but it was awesome.
Have fun -

I loosely plan it.
Like when I just recently visited Manila, I made a list of things to do and places to go to before arriving. But I never plan when it will happen. Don't like to be nailed to a schedule, but I do want to be reminded what else I'm missing.

I always make some plans but keeping them loose is the best way to have the freedom to make last minute changes. Always leave some free space in your schedule.

Always plan, I'm strict for everything.
A well planned vacation is worth especially if it takes only a couple of days.

I usually plan ahead just to make sure everything is fine.
I'm a control freak i don't like things getting derailed, that's why sometimes i don't like surprises because it means i was not in control..lol

Both. surprises are always fun, but sometimes you need to plan in order to see everything (sights, stores, places) you want to.
