I have rarely seen an altenator break. I have had them stop charging. often I have been able to just change the brushes in the altenator and all is well. take the altenator off and take it to an auto parts store like kragen, Napa , auto Zone...or like and have them check the altenator. they check them for free. Or just start the car and use a voltmeter and see what the altenator is producing for voltage at about 2,000 rpm. It should be a number over about 14.5 volts.

Dont unplug the battery your doors will lock and the truck will stall.
Instead hold a screwdricer on the middle backside of the alternator on the round flat steel spot.
This should be magnitized if it is charging, if not, it is probably junk.
You could also take it to a parts stroe and have them do a load test - FREE.
