When you say mentally fit to run it can mean a few different things. I think you either want to know
1 What you can do to make yourself want to go out and run
You need to sit down and identify what you want from running. Why do you want to do it? This part is the most important thing because it will be your motivation to achieve what you set out to do whether it is weight, body image or general fitness (running helps with all of these things)
2 What can help increase your mental toughness and help you get through the painful part of actually running.
I ran for about 2 years before buying an I pod or listing to any music while I exercised. I would just think it wasn’t necessary but I was wrong. The proper music can make you run faster and distract your mind from feeling tired. Also if the music is loud enough you cant think, this means you cant think about how tired you are or.
I hope this helps it is two things that I have worked on and it has made it easer to run.

An exercise which must be done while running. During the distances you run focus on your thoughts. The thoughts which give you different emotional strengths at different lengths are to be remembered. For instance you may find that at the start of a run you feel best while thinking about roses but, as your body begins to heat and tire you may find that you do better with thoughts of rivers and waterfalls.

Staying hydrated helps. Also right around the third mile or so the pain starts to decrease giving away to a pleasurable feeling. The strength of the heart has impact on mental ability.
Why run when you can bike or swim? Save those knee joints for the elder years.

By using a form of self hypnosis,
In other words every spare moment that you have you repeat over and over the goal you want to attain, writing the date you are going to start the endeavor, on a calender also is beneficial. You need to repeat this over and over, and the key here is you must want to do this more than anything you can possibly imagine, you must visualize it and picture yourself doing this.
And, it works.

There's no other way than to begin running. Start out slowly and with short distances and increase speed and mileage slowly.
