I hope you've already checked the power steering fluid...if not, do it. Also check your p/s belt it may have broken or come off. If the fluid is low, check for leaks and repair them.

first, make sure the power steering drive belt is still intact. Second, make sure the power steering fluid resevoir is full. More than likely you have a power steering fluid leak and the noise you heard was the pump whining due to low fluid level. If all of the fluid leaked out you will lose power assist. If the fluid is full, you either have a problem with the power steering rack or with the pump itself, but I suspect you are just low on fluid due to a leak.

I had a similar problem recently and what it was was the steering rack needed replacing and the power steering fluid was leaking from the gaiters. Not all the time but on certain locks .and this made the steering really heavy.Almost back to the days of driving before we had it as common as now.
Just a thought might be worth looking into and the fluid level also.

I changed my rack and it was great light and easy even better then before to be honest.

Your power steering fluid is low. Go to Target and find their car performance center. You should be able to find power steering fluid there. Then pop the hood to your car open and find where it says power steering fluid" or a symbol that means this and your car should steer perfectly.

So did you check the power steering fluid level? The pump sounds different when it is low on fluid.
