Open auditions are open to anyone who wants to come. They may be by appointment or not.

Closed auditions are only for those who were invited. A director or producer will call actors they think will be good candidates for the role.

Sometimes they will call for submissions - actors are asked to send in a headshot and resume. The director reviews them, and calls certain actors in to the closed audition based on their look and experience.
