The sum means addition. Raising something to a power (squaring a number) always gets done first. So it goes like this: 4 x 4 first. That's 16. They ask for the sum of this and 17, so add 16 + 17 to = 33.

17 + 4^2 = x
17 + 16 = x
17 + 16 = 33

It doesnt say to square 17, only 4. So 4*4 =16 and if its sum you know you have to add so 17+16= 33!!

Here's the solution:
17 + ( 4 x 4 )
17 + 16 = 33

Wrong solution is:
17 + 4 x 4
Why? Because when you do that you have to solve the first operation which is 17 + 4 = 21
and then 21 x 4 = 84

Note: 4 squared means 4 x 4
