We all know that the Beatles are credited with being one of the most influential bands of the Baby Boomer generation (so much so that we still love them!).

What band do you feel has been the most influential band of OUR generation? Why?

I've been struggling with this question since someone asked me a couple days ago. I can't come up with just ONE.

There's no right or wrong answer here, I'm just curious to your thought processes!

I feel kind of cheap putting this to a vote, but I honestly CAN'T choose. You all gave some insightful answers.

My thoughts were Nirvana, for one. Short-lived? Yup. The best grunge artist? No. However, what they did to break down walls for other rockers in the 90s was second to none.

I also looked at 2 Live Crew. Again, perhaps not the best of their genre, but the attention that was raised with "As Nasty As They Wanna Be" and the issue of censorship they tackled - again, broke down barriers of "gangsta" rap.

My third choice? Run DMC. Yup. Look what Rev. Run did with Aerosmith!!!

It's tough, because while I don't consider any of these artists to be the "best" - their seemingly small gestures had HUGE impact!!

Since we can only pick one band, I'll say Nirvana. Although they didn't last long, their legacy will always be opening the door to underground alternative for our generation. Long live the X'ers.

I second lovenrckts' choice. Their music was influential (though I didn't get to know it until a few years back), but beyond that, they really broke down the wall between "mainstream" and "indie" music--for better or worse! When you turn on the radio now, you hear some of the stuff that used to be played only on college radio, and I do think that that can be traced back to Nirvana's surprise vault into the spotlight. Interesting question.

Nirvana influenced who ? their type of music dyed out, there were bands just as good if not better out at the same time as them.
Influential of our time, I'd have to say Sabbath because they started the Heavier scene, which led to other types of rock, Zepp was a blues type of Rock, with good guitar riffs, Cream gave us the way bass players are heard on their music, and the who for their intense lyrics..

U2 is probably the closest match, since they appeal to so many music fans of all types. Many people grew up with them since 1980 and their first album.

Some may say Nirvana, but their music has faded a little in my book and I was never much of a fan, sounded like Husker Du or The Pixies to me with some 70's rock mixed in, nothing groundbreaking. They also do have the legacy since Kurt died and have none of the overall longevity of U2.

Queen, U2, David Bowie, Kate Bush - they have all been influential in that they have inspired and influenced many artists over the past couple of decades.

I would have to say KISS probably had more influence than any other band of our generation. I realize that there are better bands musically speaking, but you can't deny KISS's influence on the culture and the bands that came after them.

you do no longer seek for the answer to this question, for you be responsive to the respond, all too properly. ~~~~~ "each and every thing that glitters isn't gold and each thing it particularly is risk-free to eat isn't food." ~~~~~ One ought to mirror on important ideas including those! The 'human senses' are in many circumstances deceiving, is it no longer so? Peace be continually with you. in sha'Allah al-hamdu lillah Salaams,

Wow, that is tough!! I would say either Led Zepplin or Van Halen because both guitarists in those bands influenced generations of great guitarist that Gen X'rs listen to.

Good question!
