Ooh! I just had my 40th, and my partner gave me 40 days of presents up to my birthday. Everynight I got a new gift. They weren't all material things. Some were things like 20 minutes of just smooches, a foot rub, a framed photo from when we first dated, renting the first movie we saw tother, etc. They don't have to cost money or require a lot of work.
It gave me something to look forward to for over a month.
Of course, his 40th is next year so I guess I'd better start planning!

Take her some place where she always wanted to go. Most women love jewelry, try something with 4 different gems 1 for every 10 years. Or 40 roses and her favorite perfume. How about cooking her a nice candel light dinner. 40 Pennies and with each penny a wish. If you listen to your wife she might tell you something she really wants, without you having to ask.

Well getting a massage is always good especially if you can afford an entire day at the spa for her and maybe a friend or two. Another idea if you have children is surprise her with professional pictures of them or schedule a family portait of all of you. One more thought I would love it if my husband could get together our closest friends and maybe some family to go on a vacation together. Even if just a little weekend roadtrip.

Clean the house, do all the laundry, get the kids out of the house, make her dinner, and rent her favorite movie.
Then give her a spa gift card.

Get her a new car or take her on a trip somewhere special like Hawaii.
