I think they're aware of it. What to do about it is another thing altogether.
Republicans don't want to injure the insurance industry, stifle innovation, or restrict peoples' choices.
Democrats don't want to be blamed for the failures of a new system, and there will be plenty. Many also have a fixation on "fairness," and will insist that those treatments that a national system couldn't afford not be legally available to those who can pay for them. Since that will be unfair to those of their constituents who have good insurance, they have a political problem.
You'll also have to consider problems like this: I live in a small, poor, mostly rural state in which Medicaid is a budget buster, already taking up more of the state's budget than everything else (education, roads, etc.) combined.
My personal opinion is that everybody should have first-dollar coverage for a very limited basic level of health care, funded federally. Additional insurance should be widely available and not restricted by concepts of societal fairness. I'd not want to be a politician deciding what's a minimum, basic level of care, though.

Lobby for campaign finance reform. Lobby for an end to corporate lobbyists.
The insurance companies are behind this one. They do not want citizens to have health care. Some people say that if everyone had health care it would be communist, they want the government out of things. Well I have news for them. People are waking up, and realizing that there is something called "The Commons." This is some service or program that benefits EVERYONE. People are starting to realize that things like the police, fire, roads, drinking water safety, waste water processing and other such things benefit ALL of us, and they are not free. Our taxes are our dues to live in society. Everyone has to kick in so that we all can have paved roads, police and fire protection, among other things. When people tell me that the government shouldn't give us health care, that it's socialist, I tell them that we already have socialism here. When did you have to pay the police to protect them before they protect you? Did that person whose house had a fire have to pay the fire department before they put the fire out? NO! That's because these things are part of THE COMMONS. OUR TAXES paid for them. Health care is coming around to becoming one of the commons, but only if people act and let their elected officials that they don't mind paying a little more in taxes, so that EVERYONE can benefit from a national healthcare system.

Since when is it a government problem? If anyone wants the lousy malpracticed medical service of a socialized country then I suggest they move to one. I suggest people stop the risky behavior like drugs, alchohol, smoking, over eating, non excercise and everything else that PUSHES them into the health care system FIRST before MY taxes pay for their bad behavior issues.
Socialized medicine could easily bankrupt this country but you never hear the politicians saying anything about that because they just want the power of the votes. You really want the bureaucratic mess of the government running health care???? They can't even buy a cheap toilet seat with OUR TAX DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!! bs

It is not the government's responsibility to make sure all people have health insurance.
If you want to tackle this problem, start with the insane insurance doctor's have to pay so they are forced to charge high prices.
If you want to fix the problem, fix the tort system that drives doctor insurance up.
If you want to fix the problem, have the government create tax incentive for medical institution for providing free clinics and surgical procedures.
You see, none of these things will happen, because the government receives a portion of all funds in the form of taxes, and when have you ever known a politician ever to create a system where he removes himself from the picture.

I do not have nor want medical insurance. Quite a few of us have realized that doctors are just paid drug pushers for the pharmaceutical industry and only know how to push dangerous drugs or slice you up.

Lobby your Senator/Congressman...on a more local level, contact your Mayor or Governor. People are so tired of the welfare system, it's hard to get anyone to notice the true need for healthcare for the uninsured. Everyone's too greedy!

i hear the privileged whining. i got mine, you get yours. kids and older adults, sometimes fall thru the cracks. i don't propose giving medical care to the lazy or drug addicted. but there are people who deserve some help. set the standards, rules, etc. i don't see it as an absolute.
