Life does not have a purpose, except to survive. Dinosaurs, like humans, were just animals trying to survive. Ultimately, they failed, overcome by rapidly-changing environmental factors (caused by a meteor impact, or by something else).

Dinosaurs were form of reptiles that evolved during a time when animal life was taking its first steps out of water. Their massive development in range of species, verities and size finally proved that terrestrial life was indeed feasible.
Dinosaurs were also the first to fly (of course before Wright brothers). What inspired them to take to the sky is not known but the verities that could fly, survived the mass extinction and evolved into modern birds.
Dinosaurs should not be looked upon as a failed order. They ruled the planet for over 160 million years (compared to about 1 million for hominids and 5000yrs of recorded human history) and diversified into hundreds of species and were responsible for much of the present biodiversity. Many of these magnificent rulers of the earth were wiped out probably by an extraterrestrial event (perhaps a large meteorite) that created a sudden climate change, dropping of temperatures, acid rain, significant lowering of atmospheric oxygen levels.
The demise of most Dinosaurs paved the way for mammals to diversify and evolve into the present forms and we should be grateful to the dinosaurs for that!!
We on the other hand have been able to do significant climate change without much extraterrestrial help.

The answers you get will depend on a lot of speculation and personal belief.
I believe it is likely that at the time and speific climate of the time the dinosaurs in all there variety were the best suited "specialists" for thier environment. Like our rain forests today, when they diminish or cease to exist many species will become extint due to over specialization and a failure to adapt.
Now, after the extinction of the dinosaurs other species have acended.

"To be or not to be ? " is not the answer!
The answer has to be: "To be and to be and to be..."
The life basic purpose is to continue, to reproduce their DNA. . All the living things try to assure their DNA won't disappear.
The dinosaurs were an answer to the environmental conditions of the Earth before their extinction 65 MYA
I suggest you to change the question >> Why the dinosaurs existed ?

Well, why do we exist? Why do any animals exist? They probably existed because they were next in the line of evolution, and they were also next in line to be removed. some things just happen that way. i mean, we'll be removed sometime too. nothing lasts forever. but does that mean we don't have a purpose?

Whether or not there is a purpose for anything is a philosophical question. That means that you can invent any answer you like.. For example, what is the purpose of your question?

They were just part of the same evolutionary processes that would later spawn film majors. Just, you know...bigger. And less huggable.
