I'm portuguese and I guess I would follow the Spaniard and Catalan everywhere they go (a Galician person would be perfect) French: I can understand some parts but I can't have a conversation in french with anyone (I've forgotten everything about french since I don't learn it in school anymore) English: I can speak english so...even if I'm not an expert Italian: He would have to speak slowly Romanian: probably the same as french Note: Brazilian portuguese is not a language but a dialect. Brazilians speak portuguese

Well, let me tell you about an encounter while I was in the Army, ca. 1982. I had in my unit a guy from back-woods Kentucky and another from mid-town Boston, ostensibly speaking the same language, but could not communicate with each other.
Imagine if one was Japanese and the other Austrian, the problems there.

Try going to another country where you don't speak their language and it becomes very apparent that yes, you can communicate basically.
If you want to go beyond the basics it takes a lot more time, but it still works.
