Assault applies regardless of the context -- an assault can occur in the home between spouses -- or in a bar between strangers.

Domestic violence applies only to home/family situations -- but it covers a broader range of conduct than just assault.

So, a person could (depending on how the laws are written in that jurisdiction) be charged with both.

Your sister was a victim of domestic violence. I am sorry to hear that. Domestic violence is when someone physically hurts another person that they are in a relationship with.

An assault would be when you go over over and beat the living crap out of that a$$hole for hurting your sister.
