Fat chance means no chance of something happening and slim chance means there's a slight chance of something happening.

Definition of THUS (adv. formal) 1. in this way; as indicated 2. accordingly; as a result or inference 3. to this extent; so [thus far, thus much] I'd prefer to see the sentence where "thus" should be replaced by "this shows that", but a comparison of "this shows that" with "thus" leads me to suspect that your biology teacher is drawing your attention to a grammatical error, very likely an incomplete sentence.

"Slim chance" is literal. "Fat chance" is akin to saying "that's just great" when something bad happens.

I don't have an answer to your question but will be waiting to see what others think. There has to be some origin to the statement.
