They either bit them (gross) or they were long, manky, crusty and dirty . . .
just look at those today who either can't or don't bother!

I doubt very much that people who existed before the invention of scissors cared very much what their nails looked like.

As with all nails in the animal kingdom, they will eventually wear down on their own.

Hi Puddy. Check out one of the classic Blackadder episodes where Nursie tells the story of her brother inventing the idea of cutting his toe nails with a scythe and his leg fell off.

If we knew how monkeys and lemurs achieved this, we would have a clue. They rely,as far as I have been able to observe, on general wear and tear and on biting them. If you have a jagged edge to your nails, it is usually possible to find a rough surface against which to file them down. Cats like to use trees for this purpose or, when allowed to get away with it, your furniture.

how do you know that fingernails were not invented just so they had a use for scissors?

particularly they wore their hair long & wild yet for while they did start to decrease their hair before scissors think of would have used sharped knives etc... :) waves hi to Brighton x

They bit them. People were shorter then so their toes would have been closer.
