when i start my 98 grand prix gtp(sc) 98000 miles, the engine lunges forward quite a bit(but doesnt contact anything), it barely even vibrates after it starts running. is this movement normal or should i have it looked at?

if the mount were bad how much would it cost to replace them? is this something that someone with just more than a little knowledge of autos could do? if i do go through with it what is a good place to get a dead on the parts?

Every internal combustion engine moves upon start up. It's just the mass of the internal parts becoming active and moving-once the parts settle into a pattern the movement diminishes. If the movement is too extreme, check your motor mounts. At 98000 miles they might need to be replaced.

Have someone get inside and rev it up to 6 or 7 thousand RPM while you watch to see if the engine is moving.

probably bad motor mounts or weak ones, have someone get in the car and hold the brake and put it in gear and give it gas and you watch the motor to see if it moves too much.

I would have the motor mounts checked. It sounds if they are broken.
