My engagement ring is white gold and I would like to get it recoated before my wedding. The thing I am worried about is that i have heard the rings never look as good as they did before and the diamonds become lose afterwards. Is this true?

This is not true at all. Your rings will be re plated and they will look brand new again. The plating usually is a combination of platinum and rhodium.

Yes, it is. A white gold ring is nothing more than a normal gold ring coated in rhodium. This will gradually wear off over time and should be recoated. It won't look any worse. Indeed, it'll look pretty near as good as it did when it was new. I don't know about the diamonds getting loose, because the one's we looked at were wedding rings, but the fact that they needed recoating was the only reason we took the decision to pay more for platinum ones.
That and the fact that getting engaged coincided nicely with me selling my flat and getting a hefty profit from it.
Platinum looks like white gold, but it'll never need recoating.

Recoated?? Jewelers don't coat white gold with anything. It's sometimes plated with rhodium to heighten the sparkle of diamonds and when this is done the plating is only on the actually setting where the diamonds are, not the whole piece.

Just about any reputable jeweler can replate it if you need it done and plating should not loosen the diamonds. The jeweler can tighten the setting if a stone is or becomes loose though.

A good cleaning and polishing should restore your ring to it's original beauty unless it's deeply scratched. In which case you'll need to have it professionally polished by a jeweler. He or she can get the scratches out.
