Usually you hear about carburetor tickling with Amal carbs on old Brit bikes; recently I read an article that mentioned it in relation to an old BMW boxer (a slash six, maybe?). What is tickling? How and why is it done?

Tickling a Amal carb means holding down the small plunger, which holds the float down & floods the carb for more gas on the initial start. Its priming the carb.

As was said - you are pushing on a plunger on the top of the body of the carb to prime it. Old Amals and the Bings on your Beemer had this feature.

Oh, and don't listen to the BS on the Amal - they work just fine for old Brit bikes if properly cared for. If you put on a Mikuni, it might be easier to start, but it won't be authentic any longer...

Tickling a carb, is pushing fuel into the carb by thumbing a thimble sized metal button.
Very similar to lawn mowers & chain saws which have a rubber bulb that you push (squeeze) to pump fuel through the carb's bore, into the cylinder.
