It won't hurt your fish, but you may find out it tints the water brown. It may also release mild acids, so keep an eye on the alkalinity/pH if your cichlid is an African.

You may also have a little trouble keeping it from floating - if you do, use a clean bucket with warm water and put a brick on the top to keep it under water until fully waterlogged (this will also let you see if it will change the color of the water).

The only thing about coconut, is that since it's an organic material, it will be broken down over time by bacteria in the tank. It will at least look more natural than a clay flowerpot (what I've used for breeding convicts).

sure, it works great, take half of a coconut, drill a large enough hole in a side so a fish can enter it, cook it out and then a tie java fern or anubia plant onto it with some uncoloured thread, then put it into the fish tank.
it will look good and the fishes would like it.

It may release a bit of tanins into your water, but it will be harmless. There are many things you can use to make caves. Short pieces of pvc, slate, landscaping bricks, tiles, etc. are all good. Try not to use anything made out of limestone though.

It's perfectly fine as long as you run the coconut under hot water to kill the bacteria.
