To have a ball for warming up in the next inning...the first baseman is the one who starts the infield warm-ups every inning...if the first baseman has the ball from the last out he'll usually toss that into the crowd as a souvenir.

The players in the dugout toss the firstbaseman the ball because he'll keep it in his glove to warm up the other infielders when they take the field again and the pitcher is warming up his arm.

The first baseman uses that ball for infield ground balls, between innings, when the team goes on defense the next inning.

because before the next inning starts while the pitcher is warming up the first baseman throws groundballs to the other infielders. They give him the ball and he puts it in his glove so that he is ready for the next time they take the field

he keeps the ball in his mitt for the next inning, so he can warm up the infielders by tossing them ground balls while the pitcher warms up
