I was until very recently working for a company that terminated me with made-up reasons. I have applied for unemployment for the first time in 12 years, and was denied based on my former employers slanderous lies. I plan to appeal the decision made by unemployment, but was wondering if anyone knows what my rights are concerning slander, character assasination, and defamation of character. Even if you don't live in South Carolina, any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. I've already spoken to one lawyer, and he told me that if I've suffered damages, I have a lawsuit. Can anyone help me with this? I really am more concerned about the lies affecting my credibility with other employers.
Thank you, Thank you...in advance!

It will be an uphill battle if you decide to go that route. To prove slander you will have to prove that what they are saying is incorrect and that they knew it was incorrect.

In the age of lawsuits, it is very rare for an ex-employer to provide more than employment dates and pay rates.
