Well I would not go so far as to be THAT lazy with naming my dog "Dog," however I might be "one of those people" you are talking about because my dad did a similar thing with our cat. I do have a dog now and his name is Remy, however, before him my family and I had a cat and my Dad - being the great mastermind he was - named our cat Kitty. Ha Ha! So... yeah... we are not too far off from your example above. However, keep in mind my Dad chose our cats name, not me.

Plus, ironically, the name was quite clever in it’s own lazy, weird way because our cat actually learned that that was his name and it was funny because every time someone came over and either talked about the cat or called it, they would say, "Here kitty kitty..." and he would come. Then they would say something along the lines of, "Wow! Your cat is really smart (or friendly)! What is his name?" Then we would say, "You just said it. It’s Kitty." LOL! It was funny. I did like that cat though, but sadly, he passed away. Nevertheless, you can see while I smiled when reading your question. Ha Ha! Cheers!

because, it's easier for them to remember their name.Sometimes people have children and the kids can't pronounce the names, or just say dog. Some people name their dog , dog because its easier for their children to remember, and what their kid will say. i named my cat, cat but it was short for Catherine. Some people just can't think of a name for their pets, so they name them what they are.

My father-in-law has names for the dogs, but sometimes calls them dog.
He has also a cat that actually is my husbands one, which he got when he was 11 and the cat is 16 now. The cat is purposely called: baby baby kitty kitty, that's what my husband called her than. My father-in-law just hates that name and so calls it plain 'cat'

Nah, I would name my dog something related to how I got it.
Like one that I got from a home shelter that needed a home, she was battered and scared of people. She came to me and showed me eyes that looked like she wanted me to give her a chance, It looked as if she had hoped I took her. So I named her 'Hope'. It was too fitting.

No I wouldn't.
Maybe they think it's equivalent to naming a cat Kitty.
