Lee...when the light comes on it means there are one or more of your electronic components which are recieving data outside acceptable parameters. It could be a bad sensor or some other problem which is "fooling" the sensor into giving a false reading. Best thing is stop at a shop and let them hook up the scanner...or do like most people and ignore it until it quits..or like me..I put a piece of electrical tape over it so I don't have to see it!

Well, it could be a couple things but the white smoke does sound like antifreeze leaking. Check the oil in the engine and see if it's a milky white color, this means antifreeze is leaking into the engine, its a big problem. The leaks could be anything. Oil, transmission ETC. Easy to tell though, oil is black, transmission is kind of a purple color. So, if it's transmission oil, it's probably the trans gasket. If it's oil then there could be multiple leaks but have the pan gasket and oil plug checked on your next oil service. About bypassing the heater core, it shouldn't be a problem but the hoses could be leaking. The white smoke is probably from an antifreeze hose or radiator leak, the liquid is hitting the hot engine and making the smoke. Either that or burning oil, which means the valves could be bad which would not be good at all!

If you are referring to the "Check Engine Light" this does not monitor oil or coolant levels. It is triggered when a fault is detected that could effect vehicle emissions (which could be anything) and needs to be diagnosed using a special computer that interfaces with your engines computer. There are literally hundreds of possible causes so guessing is pointless.

Get the error codes read at a auto parts place. They should be able to assist you with the part that is causing the problem.
There are thousands of things that could be the cause. Some not so bad, some more serious. Get it checked out.

Do a visual inspection first; it may be something as simple as a disconected or leaking vacuum hose.
Take it to Auto Zone and borrow their scan tool if the check engine light is on. If its an oil change light; it will have to be reset after you change it. Its easy and covered in your owners manual.

When my check engine light came on, it was due to the gas cap not being screwed on tight enough. You can go to Auto Zone, they have a free diagnostic test they will run for you, and it will tell you where your problem is.
Good luck !!!

If you live near an auto parts store like AutoZone, they usually offer to read the code off the computer for free. They will probably try to sell you the part(s), but it is not mandatory.
Good luck.
