I just got a 1 gallon fish tank. Originally it was for bugs that we caught to observe, but it is turned into a fish tank (well-scrubbed of course). What can I put in it? It has a hood, light and a filter. I can't fit a bigger tank. (Not enough room on the counter)

So I could put a few small guppies? Like 2 or 3?

I agree about the beta (singular). One gallon is so small. You don't have to stay with one tenant forever. I guess I've had better luck than the other poster with Goldfish. I doubt if more than one would work in that tank. Guppies can be great in a tank that size, and they re easy to care for (and they have babies!). A nice project is to start with a tadpole and watch him become a frog. You better have a plan of what you're going to do with him once he changes! They eat bugs and they're big eaters.

The only fish you could keep in there is a Betta. A single Betta will fill up the tank, and not have much room to move. If you go with a Betta, try to get aquatic plants (Java Moss) for it as well, it won't clean the tank, and the Betta won't eat the plant, but it will make it feel more secure. Bettas breathe air (they also use their gills, but their lungs are more advanced, so it is their primary mode of respiration), so be sure it has a way to get to the surface. Lillies on the top of the tank are a horrible idea because they block the Betta from reaching the surface, and the fish will not eat the roots. If you have any more Betta questions, email me, or check out the site listed in my profile. Good luck!

By the way, Goldfish get about 1 1/2 feet long and are not suitable for tanks less than 55 gallons. In a bowl, Goldfish will only live about a year when they should live 15-20 years. Keeping a Goldfish in a small tank is a death sentence. Also, tropical fish require a heater, and most all get too large for a 1 gallon tank.

It's good that you are looking for something other than a goldfish because there is no way you could put a goldfish in a 1 gallon tank and expect it to live past a few weeks or months. This tank is really too small even for one betta, but one betta is the only fish that you could possibly put in that tiny of a tank. Remember, bettas need a filter and a heater as well. Good luck!

One, single betta. Nothing else will survive in there. And really, that's almost too small even for a betta. 10 gallons is the safest minimum fish tank size, because smaller tanks tend to breed diseases very quickly or become overrun with ammonia. You can give it a shot with the betta, but you might find it hard to keep any fish alive in that.

NO GUPPIES!!! They need a larger tank and a heater, you'll kill them!

Bettas are tropical fish, no longer coldwater fish and if the tank (or bowl) is basically too cool it needs a heater, this is basically that easy. Hydor makes a 7.5 watt heater that is ok for a a million gallon bowl, yet a smaller 4 watt could be better. i be responsive to they are obtainable yet don't be responsive to the form. a superb et keep ought to have the potential to reserve one for you or you may discover one on line.

I would stay away from goldfish, those are messy and you would have to do water changes too often. A beta would be nice or any of your smaller tropicals. Or a fresh water puffer, those are cool.

Two tiny goldfish some coloured stones and a small stone effect bridge, one sprigg of plastic weed . no room for a pump so get the oxygen tablets.
call them Itsy and Bitsy. Go for it.
