The fact that Dustin Penner signed the offer sheet suggested that he wanted to play for the Oilers. Players don't sign offer-sheets/contracts to play in places they don't want to play.

Penner knew at the time he signed the offer sheet what Anaheim's salary cap situation was. He was fully aware that the number on the offer sheet was more than Brian Burke could theoretically offer him. If he wasnted to stay in Anaheim, he was free to say 'no' to Kevin Lowe.

Similar story with Thomas Vanek, in an interview he did with WKBW TV, when asked if he had any desire to play for the Oilers, Vanek replied.....I love Buffalo, but it would be nice to play in Canada too.

I'm sure Dustin Penner was happy in Anaheim, but who's going to turned down a massive salary increase?

He didn't have to sign the offer sheet...he chose to. Yes the money is appealing but he still has to want to be with the organization. Therefore, yes, I feel he wanted to sign with the Oilers.

Lowe was not trying to push the Ducks over cap, he could have done that by only offering Penner 3 mil. The Ducks weren't in any position to make another acquisition with only having about 1.8 mill free, if anything Lowe only helped the Ducks...so please save the conspiracy BS.

Anaheim only gets a late first, second and third round picks for not matching the offer sheet. Whoever does better between the Ducks and Oilers in '08, the Ducks get those picks (because of Pronger/Lupul trade last offseason)

He wanted the money FAR more than he wanted to stay in California. Like Puck said, he has his ring and now he wants to work on his retirement plan. While I think the money he is getting is way out of line, I can't blame him for signing the offer. Now the Oilers have to hope he give them 4.3 million dollars worth of hockey each year. Pretty amazing for a guy that wasn't even drafted and has played only 101 games in his NHL career. If he can score points like he did his last year in the AHL then he can quiet his doubters. But considering he is making the kind of money that players scoring twice as many points as he did this past season he has a ways to go.

Money talks. He's got his ring. Now he works on his retirement package. I bet he doesn't mind being back in Canada all that much either. Not every guy who goes to the US likes being there, some absolutely hate it and many when they start a family want to return to Canada to raise their kids here. Why do you think the Leafs can sign so many veterans for below market value? Home is where the heart (and grandpa and grandma) is?

He had no intention or desire to leave the Ducks, but money talks.

$4M will make most places pretty darn tolerable and Edmonton's not a bad spot for a young, single guy. I'd go to a lot worse places for a lot less money.

Hmmm...interesting question. Personally, I think he just wanted more money in general. He's still young and going from $450,000 a year (that's more than what most people make anyway...) to $4.5 *pinkie to side of lips* MILLION will make anyone jump ship.
