The answer to your first question can be found more in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which delves deeper into the past of Gollum, explaining his entire history and metamorphosis. Aside from that tip, I have to agree with the first answer you got. The Hobbit is an amazing book, and one that is fairly simple to get through, not to mention extremely entertaining. Just read it. You'll be happy you did.

Don't give the excuse I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ELSE SO HELP ME!!! Get off the computer and read the book. Its really good. And don't be like I have no time. There is a reason you're in summer school you didn't make time during the year and now you have nothing but free time. So get off your lazy A** and read the book for yourself.
