I had my son 3 weeks ago, and he is my first so I don't really know what to expect. My doctors office is all booked up so I can't get an appointment until the 23rd of this month.

For the last few days, he has been twitching and tensing up alot and last night while he was sleeping, his whole body tensed up and his eyes popped open, rolled back, and started shaking back and forth... He was fine as soon as I picked him up, but today I noticed that he has some little white spots all over his tongue... Is this normal? What the heck am I dealing with, and should I take him to the emergency room?

Yes I would go ahead and take him to the dr about this...

The white spots are most likely thrush.. which is an over growth of yeast in the babies mouth.. a link is below for it..

You know my son did something similar to the shaking thing.. Sometimes it would be his whole body, then sometimes just his arms or legs... He would stop when I woke him up.. We had several and I mean several tests done to find out what caused it.. And to this day there was no real clear answer to the situation. The only thing that my dr could say it possibly was was that he was going into such a hard REM sleep that it was causing him to shake.. That he was so active that his body was still trying to go when he was trying to rest.. ?????

good luck and hope everything gets better..

If the spots don't wipe off, they are thrush. It is basically a yeast infection of the mouth. He'll probably get a yeast diaper rash too.

If you are breastfeeding, then definietly seeks treatment for both of you immediately!

Otherwise, don't worry too much and get him in to the dr as soon as possible. It causes problems with latching on and some general soreness but isn't more threatening than that.

It will probably reoccur, but starts to go away at 2 - 4 mo when your son's immune system is stronger.

The other thing could be a seizure. Take his temp and head for the ER or urgent care.

First off with a situation like this your doctor should make a point to get him in immediately. I suggest you check into getting a new doctor. Definately get him to the ER right away. When you said white dots on his tongue my first thought was Thrush (which can be very painful for the baby). But i am not sure about the shaking and stuff.

Get him checked out by the doctor. Its probably Thrush, which is a yeast infection in the mouth. It can get really bad if not treated with antibiotics and the discomfort can interfere with sucking. Thrush is very common and its nothing you did. My daughter had it so bad it came back 2x before it stayed away. But we waited a while to take her to the doctor so don't wait.

All babies get 'white spots' on their tongue around 3-4 weeks of age ... that's 'normal' ... but what you described that happened last night is TERRIBLY ALARMING ... your baby may have had a 'petit mal' seizure, which may be due to 'infantile epilepsy' (any 'seizures' if they have more than two), so I'd say you need to take your baby to the 'ER' to be examined, and get the ER to give all of the 'information' and test results to his regular doctor. GO NOW!

the white spots are thrush and he needs an antibiotic for that.

your baby is experienceing night terrors. These are most frequently fixed just by touching the baby as this happens. When the baby has night terrors, his breathing may become erratic and he may even have a heart palpitation while this is going on. As long as he responds to your touch, he is ok, but still have him seen in case it is something more serious.

I'm not sure what type of Dr. you have, but most doctors will see a newborn right away, sometimes with out an appointment. Take your baby to the ER right now. When dealing with newborns it is better to be safe, then sorry.

The white spots are either thrush (if nursing) or formula.
The shaking sounds like a seizure and I would immediatly get him in. If the dr won't see you , i would find a new dr!

First of all the tensing up and twitching is normal, they are used to bieng all bundled up inside of you and now they feel the space around them. It is not dangerous. The white spots on his tongue however probably do need treated because it is probably what the doctors call thrash. Thrash is a yeast infection in the mouth and it is not uncommon for babies to get because there is a lot of yeast in breast milk as well as infant formula. I know it sounds gross to have a yeast infection in your mouth but it is a different kind if yeast infection all the way around. I have 3 kids and one on the way and my last baby had thrash. Take him to the doctor because he will need medicine to get rid of it.

newborns do weird things, the white on his tounge is thrush and no need to worry, however I would call around to different doctors to try to get an appointment sooner.

Def. tell the doc about the shaking thing!
