a bad batting average is like .220 and below. if you're a rookie and batting like .240-.270 then thats okay but if you're pro and batting .245 then thats bad.
a good average is .290-.340
a fantastic is .350 and above.

A good average is around .300 for the season. Under .250 is considered poor.
Ted Williams was the last player to hit .400 in a season which is considered to be amazing.
As far as the top 5 hitter of all time are concerned
By batting Avg for their careers:
1. Ty Cobb - .366
2. Roger Hornsby - .359
3. Joe Jackson - .356
4. Lefty O'Doul - .349
5. Ed Delahanty - .346
As Babe Ruth's name is always synonymous with baseball - his career average was - .342 (10th on the list)
Keep in mind that most of these guys played in the 20's. As far as the best recent hitter, I pretty much agree with the other responses.

I would say a bad average would be anywhere between .000 and .275. A good average is above .300, and a fantastic average is above .340.
