Current law requires employers to confirm legal status to work in the US. I took a job temporarily at Pizza Hut as a driver (long story) and they were absolutely adament that I produce a SS card. Now, at the time i was about 54 years old, and I hadn't been asked for a SS card in years and years. I had to personally go tot he social security office to fill out the papers. Then it took a month to get the card.
So, yes, it's not only legal but required that they ask.

It's amazing the number of things interviewers aren't supposed to ask you (but do, anyway, in the hopes you'll answer - plus, if you point out that "you can't ask that" they know that you're too savvy to be easily exploited, and thus probably not a good hiring choice).
I don't know if citizenship is one of those things, though. You'd think it wouldn't be - if anything, employers should verfy that you're in the country legally, which means a citizen, national, or legal resident.

Yes, I have applied for several jobs recently and on the application it asks if I am an US citizen with legal rights to work in the USA.

No, it is illegal to ask where you are from. They are misleading you. The people here are telling you about the question on citizenship. You are asking during an interview, one thing is to ask where you are from and mother question is to ask if you are a U.S citizen or legal resident.

It is legal to ask if you are legally permitted to work in this country. But to ask your country of origin is not legal, I don't think.

No, it is not illegal. They can ask that indeed. However, they cannot ask what your race, sex, age, religion, marital status, # of dependants, disability, etc. is.
