We got a new ten gallon tank for our goldfish who we have had four days in a gallon bowl. I am in a hurry to transfer him and the manual said let the system run for two hours, we decided to let it run for 24 hours. I know its best to let a new system run for weeks but he was a rescue fish the bottom line is the longer we run the new tank before transferring him the longer he is left poisoning the bowl water. You see why i am in a hurry to get him into better surroundings. So this morning i noticed on a piece of paper "never run the filter without water in it". Just in case i decided to check and he hadnt filled it. So now I dont know what to do. Do i have to start over and wait another 24 hours for it to run through or only like 8 since the manual only recommended 2 hours. Also they say never do it but not what happens if you do. I dont even know if the filter will still function properly. It is running water through it now and still pulls water through. What should i do.

I am not sure exactly why to even run the filter before adding the fish other than to aerate. Did running the filter empty overnight or even just letting the water sit do anything?

If the water sat over night in the tank than it should be ok for the goldfish. the reason for running the filter is because it has carbon in it that will filter impurities from the water. Your right it is best to let it run longer but in your given situation the fish will be fine in the tank as long as the filter is running now. they say not to run the filter without water because the motor will burn out if it didnt and the filter is still pumping water than its no problem.

wow u care alot about ur goldfish. Well hopefully you didn't burn out the filter. The water in the 10 gallon tank should be fine to put ur fish into. Since you let it sit overnight the colorine in the water has been removed and your fish will be alright in it as far as the filter goes you have to prime it. So if it isn't burnt up all you have to do is take about a cup of water or so from the fish tank and pour it into the top of the filter. If the filter isnt burnt up it will continue to cycle

It may not be damaged. You'll know by running it with water.
2 hours should be ample for ten gallons.
The instructions may indicate the filtering capacity/time per gallons.

yea you filter might be broken now because its suppose to be sucking up water and throwing out again....the reason for this is to cycle the water and create healthy bacteria
