Of books I've read in the last year, I would say that "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini would be my most recommended. His next book, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" came out recently and is supposed to be even better. It's nice to find an author that really deserves to be on the bestseller list.

Another good book is "The Time Traveler's Wife" which, more than anything, is very touching and romantic story with a scifi twist.

And, oh yeah, you didn't say I couldn't say Dan Brown's other bestseller "Angels and Demons" which I thought was better than "The DaVinci Code." Frankly, DvC got way more press coverage than it deserved, all because of the controversy.

Like Lexie, my parents would take us to the library when we were little for story time and we would always get a couple books to read at home. So I pretty much grew up with reading as a hobby.
I guess I would say that when I was younger (a long while ago) "The Babysitter's Club" and the "Sweet Valley High" series got me hooked, I couldn't wait to read the next one to find out what happened...
Now, there's so many...One of my favorites is "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" by Mark Haddon and also Augusten Burroughs' novels "Running With Scissors" and "Dry" were good reads...

I have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember and would read anything that came my way. The one book that always sticks out in my mind though is 'The Golden Compass' by Philip Pullman. I had never seen anyone write like him and have been reading books ever since partially in hope each time of finding the next great book that I will enjoy as much as I enjoyed that book (and the rest of that series).

LOL, I agree and you didn't say I couldn't mention Angels & Demons by Dan Brown...... absolutely great, and I also think it's better than the Da V. code. I just couldn't stop reading it till I finished it...

I also had something similar happen with MEMORIES OF A GEISHA, and with many novels written by Agatha Christie.... my favorite author along with Sir Conan Doyle.

I practially grew up in the library, my mom encouraged reading a lot. So I don't think that there was one book. However I've had the opposite problem... I now have a favorite book and whenever I try to read something else, I get bored with it beause to me nothing is as good.

Have enjoyed reading a variety of good, very good books! PGWodehouse and Mark Twain for humour, John Grisham for intense presentation of some themes, Yann Martel for subtle discussion of some serious human behaviour and reflex issues (incldg religion!).......Forsythe for humour amidst heavy themes, James Hardy Chase and Gardner (Perry Mason), with Agatha Christie, for suspense of special variety.....some of the comics series (Tin Tin, Calvin&Hobbes, Asterix, IsNoGood, etc etc) with brilliant pieces of philosophy nicely dispensed.....the "compulsory reading" list is endless.... and, one is still reading...Tuesdays with Morrie, quite moving! (and, why not Harry potter and Dan Brown books, they are brilliant, too! Consider myself lucky to have read them!)
