Really, what do they teach in those fancy schools? Mindless idealism?

I knew as a teenager that people in the middle east were bitterly factionalized, and have been for thousands of years...

with the exception of Kurds, other Islamic factions got along fine, a lot better than now. it got worse during colonialism and never the way it is now. USA approach was meant to divide these factions the way they are. it is meant to make the waters muddy and fish it. the selling of weapons(EVEN THOUGH IT WILL BE USED FOR THE INTEREST OF USA OR BETTER SAID, MULTI-NATIONAL CO.)to Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries is a good evidence of that. the citizens won't get a share of that but we pay for their wars!it is a lot of money and only a fracture of what they'll be selling legally or illegally in black markets.IE; weapons exchanged for Cocaine and money; even after congress made it illegal to sent weapons to Contra , it didn't stop them. means justify the end!

Why do you assume the position rests on the intelligence of the potential applicant?

In the Bush White House, positions are given to loyal lackey's and friends. Qualifications have nothing to do with it.

I heard about Gates' background when he was first nominated for the job and I had hopes for him.

He seems to have needed to dumb down some in order to do his job "right".

Gates is not really surprised -- he's downplaying the obvious to not make his boss look bad.

The position really does not require any military experience. Its the Sec. of State that is more incharge of that role.
