I have choreographed a dance that involves wearing a long dress for part of it. The dance is modern so their is a lot of floor work. I am used to wearing pants while dancing and am worried about tripping, and or tearing the dress. The dress hits approximately an inch above my ankles.

Practice in a long skirt to build some confidence and to get used to how it feels. An inch above your ancles should be a manageable length. But practice beforehand.

You need to FLOAT across the floor, not picking your feet up too far and taking long, graceful strides. Or, in a quicker song, try to barely pick up your feet in quick little motions. Twirling in long dresses is surely the most fun thing to do on a dance floor, because the dress swirls around your ankles. Just don't twirl to much, you might just look goofy!

You have to practice ALOT and if you really need to, you could sew a line of your skirt over *horizontally* so it's not so flowy. When you're not really using your arms and you get nervous you could hold your skirt in a way thats not too obvious. When you are bending/kneeling down, when you're standing up again quickly glance at your feet to make sure they don't step onto your skirt.
Good luck!

Well first, you pick your dress out. Then you put it on, make sure it's not on backwards. Then you put your dance shoes on...you know what those are right? Then you turn your music on (assuming you have music) then you do your dance! So amazing!!!

Then you do it again and again. Then when you go on stage you quit worrying and just dance....basically it's call PRACTICE!

(not trying to be mean ;) )
