It is not the oldest profession. It is one of the oldest professions and how was anyone paid...barter or whatever they considered "money" in those parts in that time (gold, sea shells, rocks, etc.).

I asked a question like this and they said that the females would pick the strongest male and stick with him and ya know....... so he would give her food and protection.

But I do not think that is a profession because don't other animals do that it is a porffession now because there is money.
