Most polls are manipulated to show favorably whatever viewpoint they are polling about. How can they be taken seriously, and who really cares what people on the street think anyway? Most people on the street couldn't tell you who the Speaker of the House is, or even what the capital of California is. Why do polls matter and why is everything I see on here based on the latest ones?

You are right, I do see poll results used by both sides. However, it seems that it is the liberal posters here that use them as "proof" of whatever point they want to make more so than the conservative posters.

It is actually alot simpler then people make it out to be. First liberal media coporations give you news that will make you support a liberal point of view. Than that same coporation turns around and asks you to take a poll. Since you have been watching liberal media( or reading, or listening) you will than support the liberal point of view. It is basically a poll for how effectivly are they getting the liberal point of few across

Polls matter as indicators, and that's about it. The thing is that cherry picking polls doesn't work very well. But, and this is a big but, when they all read the same across the board they are a very good indicator. Think the midterms. Right before the midterms the conservatives in this forum claimed right up until election day that polls don't mean squat. But those polls were right, the Dems did take the Congress. The key was that all the polls told the same story, and in that instance they were dead on.
We don't need polls right now to tell us that the Republicans have a big problem not having a candidate they can all get behind, or that the Democrats are likely to take the White House in '08. It's obvious to every American that doesn't wear blinders.

Liberals care so much about the polls because that is the only place to ever seem to win.
Ever wonder how fitting it is that the symbol of the Democrats is a braying jackass (which if you look hard enough looks exactly like Harry Reid)?

Republicans used to care about polls, when the polls were favorable to them. But they haven't been... in a very long time. Now Repubs don't put any stock in polls.
Naturally.

first, liberals don't care any more or less about poll than conservatives do. second, most polls are conducted with good intentions, and mostly, if not totally in a professional scientific manner. there is manipulation, but it's been magnified out of proportion. lastly, we care, or should care, what people on the street think, because they are the people who are represented. if they are blisfully unaware, that's sad, but it doesn't change the fact that they are who our elected officials are paid to satisfy, even if they rarely do.

One poll by itself doesn't matter, but if you look at polls over a period of time, you can notice trends. I agree that they are not 100% accurate, but they are the only thing that gives us in idea of where Americans stand on issues. I would rather give a poll as a source than make statements like "Liberals hate America" without having anything to back it up.

Hey Truth Seeker. You found me and you are full of it that is the truth!
Lib's are people of the lie read the book of the same name well worth it.
For me on personal level I love it when one calls and I tel them the truth which is not what they want to hear so they hang up to keep only the numbers the way they want to frame them.
The left is all lies and they project their evil crap on any one that dare to stand up to them.
And they have a 30 sec mind set if it is not on you tube in 30 second sound bite than it is to much for them to digest.

Yeah, I've noticed that a few of these poll people show up every day and I laugh at them. Keep in mind that all of the 'polls' said that Gore and Kerry were winners.
Let them have their fun. They'll wake up with pie in their faces after the next general election.

If the media were serious about fairness, they would reveal the entire question and where the poll was conducted (urban/rural/San Fran/Bible belt, etc). Do they ever?
