When I was a kid, over 50 years ago, I heard this same thing; therefore I would have to say, if Christmas lost it's meaning, it wasn't recently.
Actually, I believe a lot of people think that because TV is so pervasive these days and is constantly selling things. This makes it appear that we are all in a "give me, give me" mode all the time. In fact that is not true. Every year I see many people, young and old, who spend most of the Yuletide trying to find what than can buy or do for someone else.
Keep you eyes open this Christmas and see whether or not you find that to be true. I hope you see what I see.

The retail industry has definitely done its best to make Christmas a time of material wealth. The season starts even before Halloween now and tons of people go into debt every year to purchase expensive gifts that are not even remembered come the next year! That is the Christmas the "world" sees. BUT you have the power to change that, for you, your family and your friends. Remembering the true meaning of Christmas in your heart and homes can have a huge impact on your network of loved ones. Make gifts meaningful and full of love, not expensive. Hand made gifts will be treasured forever. Also, "elfing" is a wonderful way to spread Christmas cheer, and will give you such a rush.....Elfing is where you secretly (and NEVER TELL) leave money, gifts, or goodies on a doorstep of someone who needs some help. Its amazing! And if you are lucky you may hear how your little escapade changed their life, they will never forget it that's for sure. If we can learn to give, and share that with our friends and family (especially children) we can have True Christmas every year!

which meaning is that? the birth of Christ? if you were to investigate the claims you will find that the Christmas holiday predated the birth of Christ. in fact you will find it to be the winter solstice. there is also evidence that Christ was born not in December, but earlier in the year, some say September. Christmas was chosen since the holiday was already established, and trying to get the world to accept another holiday at the time was nearly impossible. the other reason the pope chose the winter solstice was altruistic as well. identify that holiday with the birth of Christ, and the religion becomes more acceptable to the masses, and perhaps you gain many more new converts than you other wise would.

I agree with you. When it's getting to be that time of the year, all you see are comercials about gifts, and you rarely see anything about the true meaning of Christmas. And here is another thing that gets me... All of these people that want prayer removed from schools, and "Under God" taken out of the pledge... They don't have a problem taking their paid vacation time for Christmas, do they? Athiest even celebrate it, even though they don't believe in the whole reason we have Christmas!
I think everyone should have to put their religion and their opinions about what I mentioned above on their job applications and resume', and when Christmas rolls around, they should have no problem working while those of us who do believe go home to celebrate the birth of our Savior with our loved ones.

Last Christmas I had the same feeling. I tried as hard as I could when I was alone one night to grasp the true meaning of Christmas. My prayers were answered and I was rewarded with a most incredible state of Grace. It has changed the focus of my life!
I tried to think back in time to the time of Jesus's birth. I tried as hard as I could to imagine it. I felt the feelings of Mary and Joseph and I was shocked to find that they were terrified. Can you imagine the pressure of being charged with raising the Savior of the world...? When the Child was born they knew he was the Savior because of his eyes. It was like his eyes KNEW. They devoted their lives to insuring the safety of the Child With Eyes That Knew, for they knew that his life would be the most important in the history of man.
I came back to reality & found that I had somehow gone off into kind of a meditative trance as all this had happened as I was staring into a mirror in my bathroom.
This Christmas remember to spread the Good News as its gift is more valuable than any money can buy...!
God Bless,
AAS

I don't think it's lost it's meaning. Most good christians know why they are celebrating, and how they should celebrate it. The problem is corporate America has latched on to the idea that everyone has to go out and buy stuff for their loved ones. So they do everything they can to commercialize the holiday, and make it more main stream. It is up to us to see past this and remember what the holiday is truly supposed to be about.

Yes I agee with this. This year, we are not putting up a tree. I want to use a Nativity scene instead. Also we are only buying gifts for people who truly have a need, like a foster child or homeless person. We are going to volunteer at a homeless shelter also. We are tired of gimme, gimme. The kids will probably get a Bible this year too and that may be all they get.
Good Luck and Merry Christmas! (a little early but who cares)
God Bless!!!

Absolutely! It is a shame too, because it is one of the most stressful times of the year! We are to celebrate the birth of God in flesh...God's gift to us! Instead, we have turned this into a ME thing! It is out of control and it saddens me to hear about all the suicides this sort of pressure has created!
My, how we humans twist things! Something beautiful, wonderful, mysterious and me make it about us! It is wrong!
Good question and yes, I do believe that the meaning has been very distorted for the pleasure of humans.

I completely agree. When a person can take "Christmas", which is supposed to be the celebration of Christ, and use it to have "Christmas in July" and other stupid money making gimmicks, it's time to wake up.
