It means in the spring on a designated date, we have to set our clocks one hour ahead and then in the fall we set them one hour back. The idea was put into place so long ago, I'm not even sure I remember why. But during the summer months, we stay lighter later into the evening.

Daylight Savings Time occurs between Spring and Fall in the US (and some other countries, I think). The clocks go ahead one hour, so that there will be an extra hour of daylight. This originally started for farmers, etc.

I happen to live in the state of Arizona, which does not observe Daylight Savings Time--because, it is SO hot here--no one wants an extra hour of daylight.
