I have PCOS and had heard that this drug can help level out the sugers and hear that it could help with weight loss, if any one could let me know their experience and the dosage. I go to the doctor tomorrow and plan on asking regarding metformin but just wanted some information first.

this website has some good information on metformin used to treat PCOS.
Metformin is primarily used for adult onset diabetes, it facilitates the transfer of insulin across the cell membrane so your body can burn the food you eat efficiently. One of the side effects of eating properly and taking Metformin is gradual weight loss.

Metformin effects EVERYONE differently, so don't let other people's experiences with it persuade you one way or the other.

I have been diagnosed with PCOS for just over a year now and I have been on Metformin the entire time. I am also overweight with abnormal periods.

The doctor started me on 2,000 MG of Metformin daily. You have to start off taking this medication SLOW because there ARE side effects.

Many women report loose bowel movements, nausea, vomiting, weight loss (or gain), and extreme tiredness.

When I finally worked my way up to 2,000 mg, I suffered from the loose bowel movements (which weren't THAT bad, but were made worse with fatty/greasy foods).

I suffered for the first month or two with nausea, but that went away.

I was EXTREMELY tired for the first 4 months on the medication, but I found that taking a multi B vitamin helped TREMENDOUSLY.

I also lost 20 lbs the first MONTH and a HALF that I was on the medication and within the year that I've been on the medication, I've lost a grand total of 40 lbs without any effort on my part.

My periods have also been much more normal since being on Metformin. Even though I've had not so great side effects, I am very happy to be on this medication as I feel that it helps me A LOT.

Personally, I feel that the good outweighs the bad.

There is a helpful website out there called Soul Cysters. I suggest checking it out. There is a very helpful message board there with LOTS of women who will help answer any questions that you may have.

I hope that this has helped some! Good luck to you!

I have PCOS and took metmorfin. It does not have effect on weight loss and in fact, I had an opposite effect. I GAINED weight and no I was not eating more!!! I do not recommend you take it or any other drug they try to make you take, like contraceptive pills. You only mess up your system more. Instead, I recommend you watch your diet. Eat very healthy, natural organic foods and excercise. I recommend you read a book by doctor Nancy Dune about PCOS and infetility. If that does not work for you, then you can try drugs.
Good luck.
EDIT: I would hope you try a natural approach to treatment before jumping to take metmorfin or any other drug.
