Coolant does not last forever, so depending on your vehicles age and quality of antifreeze originally used it may need to be flushed. Some of the newer types can last up to 150,000 miles. Anyway if it needs to be done get a flushing Kit from your local auto parts store and follow the instructions. Just be careful to catch and properly dispose of the old anti freeze as it is very toxic to cats and dogs.

The coolant has additives that prevent corrosion. After several years it is used up and will not protect the cooling system any longer.

You can purchase flushing kits at auto parts stores. Prestone makes one that you splice a "T" fitting into and hook up the garden hose. They also make a rasiator flush chemical to assist cleaning out the rust in the block, you should get that too. Then you can remove the radiator cap and back flush the system. I also pulled the lower radiator hose to help with the flush. Once the water starts running out clear, then you can let it drain and hook it back up and fill with a 50/50 solution of distilled water and anti-freeze.

a coolant flush is important... most coolant today is good for maximum of 5 years. and almost any auto shop can do a coolant flush for you, even the quick lube type places do that. Don't try to do it yourself, because the old antifreeze is toxic and must be captured and sent to a recycle facilitie, let the pro's take care of it.

Your cooling system circulates water or something very similar through a metal engine.
This causes corrosion and some chemical build up that will make your cooling less efficient and make your water pump work harder and your car hotter.
Flush removes that build up.
Instructions should be on the container, but usually you drain coolant, put in flush, run until normal work temp. then drain and re-fill.
Hope that helps

The purpose is to clear passages by remoing old rust and scale thus making your engine run cool as it should.Buy some radiator flush, better yet,I'd reccomend to take this to a shop like Jiffy Lube.Doesn't hurt the wallet that bad and well worth it.
