As our prisons get more crowded, what should we do to help stop the government from building MORE prisons. Is the problem caused by lack of discipline in the home(children)? The large influx of foreigners coming into our country?Lack of police on the beat? What do you think?

It is very simple! Just give the offenders real panishment, by making the prison a punnishment place & not an entetaining 5 star place ! so offenders will hate to go there again, so will not repeat offending.
BUT IF THE GOV. KEEP SPENDING MORE THAN £40,000/YR ON EVERY PRISONER, THEN EXPECT CONTINUOUS RISING IN PRISONER'S No &PRISON REQUIRED!
It is our gov. policy which increasing the no of offenders, & they are looked after more than their victims.

Reduce the unreasonably long sentences for relatively minor offenses. That cost us too much money. In California, get rid of the 3 strikes rules that locks people up for most of their lives for sometimes minor offenses. Address the issues of the mentally ill. Allow media reporters to interview prisoners so the public learns what really goes on in those monolithic facilities. Provide programs for learning life and job skills and supportive programs for those released so they have a better chance of becoming responsible citizens.

Ask the Gates Foundation to take on the challenge of solving the problem of prison populations growing at an astounding rate.

Where i call home,it is no joke when i say the local court news paper register is always a split of nationalities Half local and half usually eastern block. Of these dui is popular with most getting no fine and twelve month ban Local speeders seem to get £260 fine and costs with three months. My belief is that all euc courts get together, standadise levies and the sentance be carried out in there mother country, fares to be paid for by the offender, with no return. This applies for English abroad also stay lucky

loads, bring back hanging for murder and child abuse and neglect. make prison a punishment not a holiday camp. if an 18yr old had to spend 23hrs a day in an 8 x 10ft cell with no window, no heating, no loo just a bucket, no telly,no gym and no snap except bread and water for any length of time i can guarantee he would not want to go back, unfortunately for some kids prison is a better place than their own homes, they go on to commit crimes just so that they can get sent down for a warm bed, 3 meals a day, pocket money and their own telly's and PlayStation's. put more coppers on the beat instead of plastic police,(no offence meant to the pcso's but we all know they have no real power), elect the judges, those who do a crap job get the sack, lets have uniformity on sentencing and when we say life we mean for the rest of their lives. we in this country are too tolerant and we let the namby pamby human rights wishy washy nutters walk all over us and we just sit there and take it. the law in this country at the moment is an *** and kneeds a serious overhall, starting with softy perverted judges who think because a 10yr old wears provocitive underwear she deserves to be raped.!! enough said.

Put the violent criminals (especially rapists) in their own prisons. Maybe put house burglers in there too.

Put the child abusers in their own prisons and KEEP THEM THERE.

Stop putting people in prison for marijuana! That's just stupid!

Set up a way for non-violent criminals to earn freedom early. But it must be a way that shows they can do useful things in society if they are let back in to it. If they have victims they should be working to help them because of that they did. I am only talking about non-violent crime for this.

For non-violent crime long prison times do more harm than good. Maybe more house arrest and community service and fines would be better. I think it depends on both the crime and the person.

For crimes like stealing to feed yourself or your family, prison is wrong but they should not just go free either. I'm not sure what to do about this. But I think help is more important than hard punishment.

Identify the sociopath criminals ASAP. They are different and a lot of what I say here will never work for them. They don't care about anyone but themselves and they will always be like that.

I believe that this is a multi-faceted problem. The economic situation in the urban areas is significantly decreasing because of the loss of jobs. If people are not able to support themselves with a decent wage, they will turn to a more devious way to make ends meet. The way we can make this up is by education and job training. The crime rate will drop in these areas, resulting in fewer inmates and prisons. It is not like people want to go to jail; we just have to teach them a different way to live. I know we will always have a few people who are just malicious and will always be in trouble, but 95% of people in America are hard working citizens.

Since over 50% of the prison population are ethnic minorities,as opposed to just 11% of the national population. Then it is fair to assume the overwhelming amount of imprisonable offences is committed by immigrants.

Quite simply ,stem further immigration and repatriate all offenders.
Job done.

we should make prison less desirable. if immigrants are convicted of a crime they should be immidiately deported. and finally, police are not the problem. they just do the arresting bit, its the justice system that is the problem. although on second thoughts, the police could be freed from paper work to enable them to do the arresting. the general public must take responsibility also, instead of turning a blind eye and expecting someone else to come forward and help the situation they should take some initiative themselves. its no good complaining to the police about crims they know are committing crimes if they wont make a statement about it. especially when its just little yobs, people are to concerned about their windows. do they not realise that witness intimidation is a crown court offence? judges really dont like it. so instead of moaning and each section blaming each other we should all work together.

You're a blood thirsty lot. Givcen that many peoe in prison should not br there becauuse of mental health problems or educational problems I would suggest that if that is sorted out particularly the latter there would not be overcrowding
